Collaborative Artists in Residence programme between iRes and Fine Art BA (Hons) starts with the project We Colonised the Moon by Hagen Betzwieser and Sue Corke.

We Colonised the Moon 2008 © Sue Corke & Hagen Betzwiser Hagen Betzwieser and Sue Corke are Artists in Residence at University College Falmouth for 2 weeks in February and March 2009. They will be working on the collaborative project We Colonised the Moon: Approved for All Ages - an installation in a form of a triptych of three prints.

The artists who are starting to explore the ways in which fine art printmaking and new technologies can interact, aim to continue to play, research and explore the full extent of what is possible. Their first installation will use fluresent ink and controlled lighting.

Part 1 of the project was finished in November 2008 at Bauhaus University and the final part is planned to take place in Amsterdam’s Grafish Atelier later in the spring or early summer.

This international residency is supported by iRes and Fine Art BA (Hons) at University College Falmouth.

The conceptual framework for the work is based on the artists’ initial encounter and response to the mountain glacier landscape of Sonjdeforde in Norway. This pristine, lunar like landscape of rock, ice and mist, had been invaded by tents and electricity pilons set up for a mountain film festival when artists stumbled into it last September. The discussion about colonisation and space travel began among artists and evolved into the planned installation. The work features what is envisaged by artists as an ongoing debate between east and west, and human and nature, in the form of a graphic visualisation of a battle between spacemen and rabbits. The installation, Approved for All Ages, forms part of a now ongoing collaboration to make other related work under the same theme of We Colonised the Moon.

As part of residency artists will deliver a workshop and a presentation of the work in progress. Detailed programme below:

Sue Corke is a recent graduate of the MA Illustration course at University College Falmouth and a previous student of Fine Art and Digital Arts from Middlesex University. Her individual practice is focussed on printmaking and she has recently also been an artist in residence at Amsterdam's Graffish Atelier. She is currently working on an Arts Council project with local printer John Howard RE. In 2008 she used the Ferdynand Zweig Scholarship for travel research which she won whilst at Falmouth, to travel to Scandinavia.
Hagen Betzwieser’s artistic practice is based on a game with possibility. He originally studied at Merz Akademie Stuttgart working mostly with video, video installation and conceptual art. After graduating in 2001 he became the creative director for a design company in Stuttgart creating media and video installations for science centres, museums, and other major clients. Then in 2005 he escaped the commercial world with an artist's residency at Akademie Schloss Solitude. Since, he has been travelling extensively and working full time on his project, the Institute of General Theory. In 2008 he started a PhD in Art and Design on NEW-NEW-MEDIA at the Bauhaus University in Weimar in which he is now questioning the media of tomorrow.

iRes, Research in Network Art at University College Falmouth is a dynamic research environment focusing on the ethical production and dissemination of cultural forms within network societies. Bringing together practitioners, theorists and communities of interest working across a broad spectrum of art, performance, design and media, iRes encourages the pollination of experimental ideas across disciplines. Research is practice-led and is underpinned by discourses around networks, technologies, art and trans-subjectivity. It is disseminated online and offline as network art and performance through exhibitions, publications and conferences.
